Intensive Care Consultant
· Commencing September 2025
· 1.0 EFT, Ongoing
The Royal Children’s Hospital seeks applications for an Intensive Care Consultant to join the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit.
The Hospital:
The Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) provides specialist paediatric healthcare to the children of Victoria, Tasmania, southern NSW and parts of South Australia; and is the designated state-wide provider of services including paediatric trauma, rehabilitation and forensic medicine. As a national quaternary centre for complex cardiac surgery and organ transplantation, the RCH cares for the sickest children from around Australia. There are active clinical postgraduate programs and extensive research facilities within the hospital, Murdoch Children’s Research Institute and the University of Melbourne available for the successful applicants. Further information about RCH is available at www.rch.org.au
The Role: Intensive Care Consultant
The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at The Royal Children’s Hospital is a high-acuity quaternary ICU with combined cardiac and general unit. It also delivers statewide emergency care and leadership through the Paediatric Infant Perinatal Emergency Retrieval (PIPER) service, with paediatric retrieval staffed by PICU clinicians. We are seeking a dynamic and collaborative Paediatric Intensivist to join a team of 17 specialists providing the full spectrum of paediatric intensive care, including participation in the PIPER-Paediatrics roster.
The successful applicant(s) will demonstrate excellence in general and cardiac paediatric intensive care, with the ability to lead multidisciplinary team members in a complex quaternary ICU setting. They will contribute to interdepartmental collaboration, interdisciplinary education, and system development at both hospital and statewide levels. A key non-clinical focus will be supporting capability-building in regional and rural settings, and advancing Victoria’s paediatric emergency transport system through collaboration with PIPER and referring hospitals—improving clinical standards, guiding transfer decisions, and delivering structured outreach, education, and system-level initiatives.
Applicants must hold Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine (FCICM) and be eligible for medical registration in Victoria. Substantial experience in general paediatric intensive care, in particular the care of complex trauma and in neurocritical care, oncology and bone marrow transplant patients, and in newborn and paediatric transport, is essential. Dual paediatric and adult ICU experience is desirable. A demonstrated strong commitment to training, quality improvement, and research are highly regarded. Prior experience in simulation-based education, particularly in transport medicine, would be an advantage.
