The Department of Justice and Community Safety (the department) is seeking an Industry Supervisor, to provide a critical role within Western Plains Correctional Centre.

Western Plains Correctional Centre is a modern, maximum-security prison focussed on rehabilitation, housing up to 1248 people in custody. Western Plains features multi-purpose infrastructure which is adaptable to the evolving needs of Corrections Victoria and the people in our care. Modern amenities include medical wards, a cultural centre, and vocational training facilities.
Western Plains provides a holistic, multidisciplinary approach to individualised care which motivates, encourages and promotes reintegration into the community. Western Plains operates with three primary service teams: Workforce and Prison Services, Communities, and Safety and Operational Service which collaboratively deliver comprehensive services for people in our care, safety management, and corporate services. Through its innovative design and service model, Western Plains aims to create a thriving environment conducive to safety and positive behavioural change.
The Vocational Services Team consists of three key portfolios – industries, education and programs. The role of the team is to prepare people in our care for release and to enhance post release employment opportunities through prisoner employment, integrated job training, targeted educational opportunities, personal development programs and activities.
About the Role
The Industry Supervisor is responsible for the management and delivery of specific functions within a production or service industry under the guidance of the Industry Manager. The role requires leadership, maturity, sound judgement, confidence in decision making, with developed capabilities to coach, mentor and motivate staff and prisoners. Highly developed communication, negotiation and problem-solving skills.
The role assists with the operational aspects of prison production and service industries, to achieve commercial production targets and customer expectations, maintaining control of stock, materials, and financial records and providing an industry model of Trade training and assessing environment.
The Industry Supervisor will assist with the management of employment for people in our care, safe operating procedures and other OHS legislative requirements and compliance with prison industry procedures. They will ensure industry staff under their supervision correctly operate a variety of industrial equipment, collate information, observe and assess prisoner behaviour and prepare reports.
The Industry Supervisor plays an integral role in developing, implementing, reinforcing and reviewing practice and procedures relating to industry processes, offender management and security management.
As a leader, the Industry Supervisor role models self-respect and respect for others. They provide leadership and coaching to staff, they lead by example with the Sector values and actively contribute towards creating and sustaining a positive and healthy workforce culture built on solid values, professional excellence and teamwork.
Knowledge and skills within metal fabrication, warehousing, powder coating, snap frozen foods, kitchen, laundry or grounds and environmental services would be highly desirable.
