NHW is the major regional health service and specialist referral facility for Northeast Victoria. It serves a population of approximately 102,000,
performs over 6,500 procedures a year and has over 19,000 inpatient episodes and 30,000 Emergency Department attendances a year and approximately 700 births per year. We have onsite radiology, pathology and blood bank service. NHW provides a wide range of acute specialist medical and surgical services, an emergency department, critical care unit (ICU, HDU, CCU), obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, specialised aged care, medical oncology services, community rehabilitation, inpatient, community, aged and psycho-geriatric mental health services.
NHW has recently completed a major redevelopment, including the building of a new emergency department, ICU, and expansion of medical and paediatric units
Applications are invited from doctors who are wanting to undertake a PGY2 / 3 year at Northeast Health Wangaratta (NHW), including applying for a Rural Generalist (RG2) training post in 2026.
The HMO stream is designed to flexibly deliver career pathways for junior doctors.
HMOs may choose from any of the available hospital rotations to develop careers in medicine, general practice or other specialties. Rotations essential to develop your HMO career are negotiated and guaranteed with the offer of contract.
Hospital Medical Officer (PGY2 / 3)
The HMO year consists of four terms of 13 weeks in duration.
The rotations on offer are as follows: Emergency Medicine, Anaesthetics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Rehabilitation, General Practice (Rural Generalist / John Flynn placement), Hospital in the home (HITH) and General Medicine.
Applicants will be required to discuss rotation preferences at Interview.
If you are an International Medical Graduate, we would require you to have recency of practice (ideally within the last 2 years).
There is an option to undertake Basic Physician Training / BPT 1 at Northeast Health Wangaratta. If you are interested in this, please do include it in your application.
If you are wanting to be considered for a RG2 training position and or Rural Generalist - General Practice Rotation, your cover letter should outline the following: Interest in applying for Rural Generalist Year 2 (RG2) position and desire to work at NHW
Commitment to rural generalist training including advanced discipline of interest (if known).
