Northeast Health Wangaratta (NHW) has an exciting partnership with Alfred Health. We are recruiting for 2-4 advanced physician trainees to receive high quality, well supervised core general medicine advanced training (6 months) or core infectious diseases training (6 months) in Wangaratta. These rotations can be done consecutively or paired with a core sub-specialty or general medicine related advanced trainee role from The Alfred Health program (6 months).
NHW has 12 staff specialist physicians who are all eager to teach and support our junior staff. Our physicians have subspecialty qualifications or experience in cardiology, neurology, geriatrics, infectious diseases, gastroenterology, respiratory medicine and diabetes.
NHW is the major health provider in the Central Hume region. NHW has just completed a major redevelopment, including the building of a new emergency department, ICU, and expansion of medical and paediatric units.
Northeast Health Wangaratta is accredited with The Royal Australasian College of physicians as a level 1 hospital meaning up to 12 months of service can be accredited towards core general and acute care medicine advanced physician training.
NHW is a growing regional service with 255 beds and is the major referral facility for the greater part of Northeast Victoria. Our service is growing with over 30,000 emergency presentations and 3500 general medical admissions per year.
The unit is supported by a broad range of inpatient specialties including an Intensive Care Unit, General Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Urology, Anaesthesia, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Geriatrics/Rehabilitation, Medical Oncology, and Mental Health services.
The service contributes to undergraduate and post-graduate medical education and to nursing and allied health education. The University of Melbourne’s popular rural clinical school is located onsite and its education facilities include a simulation lab and skills centre.
The Role
The core general medical role would involve being the lead registrar on one of our inpatient general medical units. The trainee would be responsible for providing care to admitted patients under the supervision of their ward consultant. The patient population is diverse with a high proportion of younger patients providing the trainee opportunities to build their skills across a range of subspecialty areas in addition to managing patients with complex multi-morbidity. There is no expectation that the trainee will participate in the weekend, on-call or night roster.
In addition to their core role the trainee will have the opportunity to attend a sub-specialty clinic in an area of their interest. This could include gastroenterology, neurology, infectious diseases, osteoporosis or obstetric medicine. Opportunities also exist to receive supervised training in pleural procedures, bronchoscopy, endoscopy, echocardiography and cardioversion.
The infectious diseases role involves running an inpatient ID consult services supported by 3 ID physicians. The role provides experience in a diverse range of infectious diseases with a significant case load in orthopaedic infections, bacteraemia and environmental infections such as Q-fever. Additional experience is available in antimicrobial stewardship, infection prevention and control and hospital in the home. The role also includes support to our peri-operative medicine service including exposure to orthogeriatrics supported by our dedicated orthogeriatrician.
The Alfred Health role will be a core subspecialty or general medicine related position that will be negotiated with successful candidates based on their preferences. Opportunities exist in neurology, respiratory, cardiology, ICU and HITH.
Accommodation support can be discussed with applicants. Applicants must have current registration with AHPRA and be eligible for accredited advanced training with RACP
