Work Type: Fixed-term - Full-time or part-time
Salary: $65 - $100
Grade: Grade not specified
Occupation: Medicine, nursing and midwifery
Location: Melbourne - CBD and Inner Metro suburbs
Reference: 6918
About the Role:
Western Health, a leading tertiary health service, proudly serves Melbourne's diverse, multicultural western suburbs through three dynamic Emergency Departments at Footscray, Sunshine, and Williamstown Hospitals alongside Urgent Care centres at Bacchus Marsh and Melton.
Victoria's largest healthcare infrastructure project – the New Footscray Hospital opened on 18 February 2026, creating unprecedented opportunities for Emergency Registrars to join our high-performing teams. The $1.5 billion New Footscray Hospital will deliver over 500 beds and a state-of-the-art Emergency Department projected to manage 55,000+ presentations annually, featuring expanded resuscitation bays, fast-track streaming, short-stay observation, and an 8-bed Mental Health & AOD Hub (mid-2026). Footscray ED currently sees over 40,000 adult patient presentations per year.
Sunshine Hospital is one of Australia's busiest ED’s with 110,000+ presentations/year (including 28,000 paediatric cases). It includes dedicated areas for acute ED presentations as well as fast track, short stay unit, resuscitation and mental health/AOD services and a dedicated paediatric ED. Emergency obstetrics and gynaecology are also predominantly seen at this campus.
Both departments offer exposure to a diverse and interesting case mix in a well-supported environment with access to all major surgical and medical specialties and are supported by active on the floor Consultant leadership, supervision and education for 16+ hours/ day, seven days/week.
The ED Medical officer (EDMO) role offers a unique opportunity to join a growing and dedicated Emergency Medicine (EM) team. The position requires applicants to be eligible for general or provisional registration as a medical practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulatory Authority (AHPRA). If AHPRA registration is limited, your application must include evidence that the level of supervision required is Level 2 or higher.
Most EDMO positions are based at the Sunshine ED and Footscray ED. The role almost exclusively gives adult experience with Paediatric experience only available through a 3 month rotation to either Williamstown ED or a single highly sought rotation to the Sunshine Paediatric ED and cannot be assured at application. It is ideal for those with 2+ years post graduate experience, wanting a broad emergency experience. It may suit those not yet experienced enough for the ED Registrar role including GP trainees (who do not primarily need paediatric experience). At the same time, it provides an opportunity to complete an EM Certificate and obtain further experience to transition to an ED Registrar position.
Our education program is well regarded. We offer regular weekly teaching to cater for the needs of junior medical staff working in the department. There is support for candidates wishing to pursue the ACEM Foundational Emergency Medicine Training Programs (FEMTP). An active research team provides support for those interested in research through the Joseph Epstein Centre for Emergency Medicine Research.
For those wanting to live in Melbourne and be part of a great team whilst experiencing exciting medicine and interesting pathology, come west of the Maribyrnong - we look forward to welcoming you to our fun and committed family!
