Role
Thank you for your interest in the Director of Sub-School positions at Balwyn High School. We are seeking high performing educational leaders who can work collaboratively and effectively to make positive and significant contributions to the academic outcomes and wellbeing of our students and community members.
The Directors of Sub-School will work closely with the Assistant Principals (Sub-School Leadership and Wellbeing & Inclusion), the Director of Wellbeing & Inclusive Education and the Learning Specialists responsible for Student Engagement & Development.
The successful candidates for these positions will be expected to be active members of the school¿s Leadership Team. As educational leaders they will be committed to the leadership and management of change and continuous school improvement. They will have specific portfolio duties and will be actively involved in whole school leadership. As members of the Leadership Team they will be committed to their own professional learning and creating and sustaining a performance and development culture. The successful candidates will take their place in a Leadership Team that prides itself on working collaboratively to support best practice.
Leading Teachers share responsibility for whole school improvement and effectiveness and for implementation of the school¿s Vision, Values and Mission. As educational leaders, the Directors of Sub-Schools will be actively involved in leading and managing the creation of a learning community and the improvement of student learning outcomes. This requires high level commitment to the implementation of the School Strategic Plan¿s goals and priorities, and the strategic direction of the school.
Our Directors of Learning will have a high-level knowledge of educational research and practice as it relates to student learning and the design of curriculum that promotes powerful learning in all students. They will be leaders with the ability to initiate and manage change and engender enthusiasm for positive innovation for the development of the Victorian Curriculum in Years 7 - 10 and for the continuing implementation of VCE courses.
The Directors of Sub-Schools will model commitment to on-going professional learning and growth. They will provide high level whole school leadership and exemplify the professional standards expected of teachers. A five-period time allowance is provided for this position. [Please note: we operate on a timetable of four 74 minute lessons per day].
Responsibilities
Director of Middle School Responsibilities:
- to provide educational leadership in the coordination of the Middle Sub-School and to be responsible for the curriculum organisation and general education of Middle School students
- to role-model exemplary instructional practice and engagement in the Balwyn High School Teaching and Learning program
- to innovate and engage as a member of the Middle School Executive Team, to ensure a rigorous and flourishing Middle School program for all community members
- to foster a mutually supportive and cohesive team of staff with the emphasis being on student learning, student wellbeing and engagement and student transition and pathways
- to effectively monitor student progress and wellbeing and implement appropriate strategies to maximise student learning opportunities
- to provide support and mentoring to the Middle School team, including: Assistant Director of Middle School, Learning Specialist: Student Engagement & Development (Middle School), and the Student Learning & Wellbeing Managers (SLWMs) at Years 7-9
- to provide advice to, and support for, staff and students on Middle School matters
- to oversee and assist, in conjunction with the Director of Senior School, in the transition of students from Middle School to Senior School
- to coordinate Year Level Assemblies for Years 7-9 that reflect the goals of the Middle School
- to formulate and present a Program Budget to School Council
- to administer the Program Budget throughout the year
- to communicate with networking primary schools to support the transition of students to BHS
- to work closely with the Principal Team and to deputise for them when the need arises
Tasks:
Administrative
- to work with the Assistant Principal regarding student enrolment matters
- to work with the Assistant Principal and Year 7 SLWMs to lead a significant transition program for prospective Year 7 students and then throughout their first year at BHS
- to assist the Director of Senior School to organise course selection processes and counselling procedures for Year 9 students proceeding to Year 10, and for students progressing to early entry VCE
- to organise Information Evenings for parents and students of Years 7, 8 and 9
- to lead SLWM meetings each term with the Director of Senior School
Curriculum
- to work with the Assistant Principal and/or Director of Wellbeing & Inclusive Education and Year 7, 8, and 9 SLWMs on matters relating to student progress, including the monitoring of adjustments for students
- to track and monitor student learning and wellbeing data with the Assistant Principal to inform the professional learning of staff, curriculum design and assessment practices
- to liaise with the relevant Assistant Principal, Director of Pedagogy, Director of Wellbeing & Inclusive Education, Heads of Learning and Learning Specialists to develop and implement professional development activities to ensure the continuing successful implementation of the Victorian Curriculum
- to be a member of the Learning and Teaching Team and the Strategic Management Team
- to organise Middle School Camps, Tours and other experiential learning opportunities in conjunction with the Assistant Principal, the Assistant Director of Middle School, SLWMs and curriculum leaders
- to work with the Years 7-10 Careers Leader to ensure that Middle School students access high quality careers and course selection counselling
Wellbeing and Student Management
- to work with the Assistant Principal and/or Director of Wellbeing & Inclusive Education and Year 7, 8 and 9 SLWMs on matters relating to student progress, including supporting the monitoring of IEPS for targeted students with the Director of Wellbeing & Inclusive Education
- to work with the Assistant Principal, SLWMs, Director of Wellbeing & Inclusive Education to ensure
- a high level of support for students through appropriate student management, transition, study skills programs, counselling and pastoral care
- effective communication between teachers, students and parents, e.g. monitoring of progress via Student Planners/organisational devices, Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences, Parent Information nights
- to monitor student wellbeing and recommend intervention with the Director of Wellbeing & Inclusive Education
- to assist the Assistant Principal in overseeing, monitoring and ensuring that the Student Wellbeing Policy is adhered to by students and staff
- to conduct discipline conferences with students and families
- to recommend to the Principal disciplinary consequences for students and to communicate these consequences to parents/guardians
Other
- to promote the interests and activities of the Middle School via regular Sub-School assemblies, newsletter contributions, Newsfeed and School publications
- to attend weekly Middle School Executive Team meetings with the Assistant Principal, Director of Wellbeing & Inclusive Education, Assistant Director of Middle School and 7-9 Careers and Pathways Coordinator
- to support the engagement of regional and community networks to nurture the learning and wellbeing needs of community members
- to administer the Middle School Program Budget
- to track and monitor student learning and wellbeing data to determine transition and pathways opportunities for students
- to provide support for staff with Victorian Curriculum implementation, including the Seven to Ten Assessment and Reporting Policy
- to work with the Director of Student Leadership/Voice and the Middle School student leaders for events and to harness student feedback
- to support school events (Music, Production, Art Show etc) which involve Middle School students
- to ensure the submission of Award Winners for Presentation Night
- to perform other duties as directed by the Principal
Director of Senior School Responsibilities:
- to provide educational leadership in the coordination of the school program within the Senior School and to be responsible for the curriculum organisation and general education of VCE and Senior School students including VCE pathways.

- to oversee the procedures for internal assessments in Senior School, including semester examinations and VCE School-assessed Coursework (SACs)
- To oversee the process of VCE assessment, including:
- The scheduling of a yearly VCE assessment calendar
- The coordination of consistent test conditions in SACs, and
- The recording and submission of VCE results.
- to work closely with the Senior School Career Counsellor to administer VTAC information and applications
- to oversee, monitor and ensure that relevant School policies and VCAA Guidelines are adhered to by students and staff
- to arrange the clerical support for the VASS system through the Business Manager and oversee this function
Curriculum
- to work with the Assistant Principal and/or Director of Wellbeing & Inclusive Education and the Year 10, 11 and 12 SLWMs on matters relating to student progress including: documentation related to authentication, consideration of disadvantage, special consideration, academic achievement, etc
- to liaise with the relevant Assistant Principal and the Director of Pedagogy to develop and implement professional development activities to ensure the continuing successful implementation of the VCE
- to be a member of the Strategic Management Team, the Assessment and Reporting Committee and the Learning and Teaching Committee
- to oversee the organisation of programs supporting the learning growth of students in Years 10, 11 and 12, including examination preparation programs
Wellbeing and Student Management
- to work with the SLWMs, the Director of Wellbeing & Inclusive Education and the Assistant Principal to ensure
- a high level of support for students through appropriate student management, transition and study skills programs, counselling and pastoral care
- Monitoring of student learning and wellbeing data and communication with parents/carers
- to assist the Assistant Principal (Wellbeing & Inclusion) in overseeing, monitoring and ensuring that the Student Wellbeing Policy is adhered to by students and staff
Other
- to promote the interests and activities of the Senior School via regular Sub-School assemblies, newsletter contributions, Newsfeed and School publications
- to prepare and publish the student VCE Handbook
- to administer the VCE Program Budget
- to provide support for staff with VCE policy implementation
- to work with the Senior School Student Leaders

- to organise Graduation Night in conjunction with Assistant Principal: School Operations, Staffing, Facilities, Enrolments & Major Events
- to oversee displays, the presentation of notice boards and the Year 12 Study Centre in conjunction with the Year 12 SLWMs
- to perform other duties as directed by the Principal
Who May Apply
Teachers currently registered or eligible for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching and qualified to teach and/or have demonstrated experience in the curriculum area(s) specified for the position.

VIT LANTITE
To be eligible for employment, transfer or promotion in the principal or teacher class a person must have provisional or full registration from the Victorian Institute of Teaching. In addition, from 3 August 2020, to be eligible for employment in the principal class or teacher class, a person who graduated from a Victorian Initial Teacher Education program after 1 July 2016, must demonstrate that they have passed the literacy and numeracy test for initial teacher education (LANTITE) requirements. This condition is satisfied where the LANTITE requirement is part of the Victorian Initial Teacher Education program completed by the person.
