NHW is the major regional health service and specialist referral facility for Northeast Victoria. It serves a population of approximately 102,000, performs over 6,500 procedures a year and has over 19,000 inpatient episodes and 30,000 Emergency Department attendances a year and approximately 700 births per year. We have onsite radiology, pathology and blood bank service. NHW provides a wide range of acute specialist medical and surgical services, an emergency department, critical care unit (ICU, HDU, CCU), obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, specialised aged care, medical oncology services, community rehabilitation, inpatient, community, aged and psycho-geriatric mental health services.
NHW has recently completed a major redevelopment, including the building of a new emergency department, ICU, and expansion of medical and paediatric units
NHW currently has an ID consulting service which sees over 700 consults per year. Consults are diverse and include a significant volume of immunocompromised patients, orthopaedic infections and environmental infections such as legionella and Q-fever. There are 2 AMS rounds weekly supported by an AMS pharmacist and the service is supported by a general medicine advanced trainee from Alfred Health. The ID/AMS service contributes to NHWs broad range of inpatient specialties including an Intensive Care Unit, General Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Urology, Anaesthesia, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Geriatrics/Rehabilitation, Medical Oncology, and Mental Health services.
NHW has a growing HITH service with 12 beds and a weekly clinic. The predominant activities are parenteral antibiotics, complex wound care, anticoagulant management and heart failure management. The service is supported by experienced nursing staff and a dedicated hospital medical officer.
The service contributes to undergraduate and post-graduate medical education and to nursing and allied health education. University of Melbourne’s popular rural clinical school is located onsite its education facilities include a simulation lab and skills centre.
The Role
Northeast Health is looking for an infectious diseases physician including those in their final year of training to contribute to the ID, AMS and HITH services. You will be supported by a locally based ID physician.
