Join VMIA as a Construction Underwriter and help support some of Victoria's largest infrastructure projects. About the role
As part of VMIA's Infrastructure & Energy Team, you'll support major government projects by providing specialist underwriting expertise, strategic insurance advice and tailored solutions.
You'll collaborate with government clients, brokers, reinsurers, construction professionals and internal teams to deliver effective insurance programs and trusted advice.
Key responsibilities
Underwrite and manage a portfolio of construction insurance exposures for major infrastructure projects.
Develop insurance strategies aligned with client needs and VMIA's objectives.
Provide specialist advice on construction insurance products, policy coverage and insurance solutions.
Build strong relationships with clients, brokers, reinsurers and internal stakeholders.
Analyse underwriting information and portfolio performance to support sound decision-making.
Monitor market trends, legal developments and emerging issues.
Contribute to product development, continuous improvement and underwriting best practice.
Support client presentations, training and industry engagement activities.
Conduct construction assessments and provide technical advice where required.
Who you'll work with
You'll work closely with the Infrastructure & Energy Team, Pricing & Capital Management, Claims, Finance and the broader Risk, Insurance & Claims Solutions Division.
Externally, you'll collaborate with government clients, insurance brokers, reinsurers and industry partners.
What we're looking for
We welcome candidates with strong underwriting experience from any insurance sector, as well as professionals with a technical construction background who can apply their expertise to construction assessments and advisory work.
You'll bring:
At least five years' experience in underwriting, broking, commercial insurance, construction or a related technical discipline.
Strong commercial judgement and the ability to solve complex problems.
Knowledge of general insurance principles and commercial insurance products, or demonstrated technical construction expertise.
Strong analytical and decision-making skills.
Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement and relationship management capabilities.
The ability to manage competing priorities while delivering high-quality client service.
A collaborative approach and commitment to continuous improvement.
Construction industry, construction insurance or reinsurance experience will be highly regarded.
Qualifications
Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline or insurance-related professional qualifications are highly regarded.
ANZIIF membership or equivalent professional accreditation is desirable.
Candidates must satisfy APRA Fit and Proper requirements.
