About the role
The Cloud Environment Engineer sits within Transport Digital Solutions and Service Management. This position is responsible for the implementation, management, and operation of Microsoft Azure cloud services, working in collaboration with delivery and vendor teams to meet business expectations and align with security, government, regulatory, and compliance standards.
In this role you will provide technical leadership and guidance to ensure Azure environments are fit for purpose, secure, scalable, and optimised for performance and cost.

Position accountabilities
The Department of Transport and Planning is seeking a skilled Cloud Engineer to support the delivery of secure, scalable and cost-efficient Azure solutions. In this role, you will collaborate with stakeholders and managed service providers to design and enhance cloud environments that meet business needs and align with long-term improvement roadmaps and compliance expectations.
You will apply best-practice methodologies for continuous integration, deployment and delivery across the Azure ecosystem, helping to automate workflows and enable development teams. A strong focus on scalability, optimisation and innovation is essential, alongside the ability to work closely with support and project teams to ensure reliable and high-performing cloud services.
Staying current with emerging Azure capabilities will be key, as you proactively assess new features and technologies that can strengthen the department’s cloud platforms. You will also conduct audits and manage cloud budgets to optimise spending, implement savings plans and ensure infrastructure remains sustainable and efficient.
This role contributes to a flexible, safe and collaborative team environment while helping the organisation advance its digital foundations and deliver improved outcomes for staff, partners and the community.
Qualifications and experience
Mandatory
– Relevant tertiary or equivalent industry qualification in information management, computer science or a related field.
– Minimum 3 years’ experience in managing enterprise Microsoft Azure cloud environments.
– Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert or Microsoft Certified: DevOps Engineer Expert.
– Azure experience deploying applications and building infrastructure using CI/CD deployment pipelines (e.g., Azure DevOps Pipelines, GitHub Actions).
– Azure experience developing and adopting DevOps strategy and ways-of-working, including Infrastructure-as-Code (e.g., ARM, Bicep, Terraform).
– Proven hands-on experience with Azure identity and access management services, including Azure Active Directory and Entra ID.
Desirable
– AWS Cloud experience.
