Newcomb Secondary College GATE (Guided Alternative to Traditional Education) Nobody¿s Fool Program
This teaching position is based 3 days per week with Somebody¿s Daughter Theatre - Newcomb Secondary College at Victorian Sailing Centre.
Nobody¿s Fool Program - Newcomb Secondary College Program is an intensive creative arts-based education program with a maximum enrolment of 15 students. It is a collaboration between Somebody¿s Daughter Theatre Company and the Victorian Department of Education and Training ¿ Newcomb Secondary College.
All of the young people in the program are aged between 12 and 18 years who have become disconnected from formal education due to multiple forms of social, economic and emotional disadvantage.
The background of students is diverse but they have commonly experienced trauma in their lives through violence, family breakdown or associated mental health issues. Disengagement from mainstream education can also be the result of chronic anxiety, depression or specific learning or language difficulties.
Somebody¿s Daughter Theatre runs the core of this program with rigorous workshops in drama, music and art and from this emerges a public creative outcome - a piece of high quality theatre which gives voice to the young people¿s stories. An original play is devised and performed to a range of schools and communities in rural towns as well as cities. The play is supplemented with discussions, workshops, follow-up materials and strategies.
The specialist part-time teacher will be employed by Newcomb Secondary College to work one on one with participants on literacy and numeracy and to negotiate pathways back into formal education or training.
The successful applicant will join a supportive team to meet the diverse needs of this multi-age cohort of young people. The role of the teacher will be to develop and deliver individual learning programs for each of the participants with a strong focus on literacy.
The program will operate out of the Victorian Sailing Centre. The teacher will be employed by Newcomb Secondary College.
