Music Specialist Teacher ¿ 0.4
Darnum Primary School is seeking an enthusiastic and engaging Music Specialist Teacher to join our school for two days per week (0.4 FTE). Music is a highly valued and popular part of our school program. Our students love making music, performing and being involved in the many opportunities that the program provides. We are looking for someone who can continue to build on this strong foundation while bringing their own skills, interests and creativity to the role.
The Music Specialist Teacher will teach eight classes across the school over two days each week, providing students with a practical and engaging music education. From the early years, students develop the foundations of musicianship, including recognising and maintaining a beat, reading and performing rhythms, and learning to read music notation on the staff. As students progress through the school, they have opportunities to play and perform using a wide range of instruments, including:
A popular feature of the program is the Grade 5/6 Rock Band, which is scheduled within the school timetable as an opt-in opportunity for senior students. Students have the chance to develop skills in electric guitar, bass guitar, drums, keyboards and vocals while learning to rehearse and perform together as a band. The current program also includes lunchtime instrumental opportunities such as guitar groups and djembe drumming. The successful applicant will have flexibility to continue these or introduce lunchtime groups that reflect their own musical strengths and interests.
Performance is an important part of music at Darnum Primary School. Students regularly have opportunities to perform at assemblies, concerts and other school events throughout the year. Every two years, the school presents a whole-school production at the West Gippsland Arts Centre, involving every student and bringing our school community together for a major performance. In alternate years, we hold our Christmas Music Concert on the school oval. A stage is set up outdoors and each class performs an item for families and the wider school community. Families bring picnic rugs and camping chairs, food trucks join us for the evening, and our end-of-year presentations form part of the event. It is a relaxed and enjoyable celebration of music, our students and our school community.
We are looking for a teacher who enjoys making music with children and can create a classroom where students are enthusiastic about participating and performing. The successful applicant will be comfortable teaching students from the early years through to Grade 6 and supporting students with a range of musical experience and ability. They will ideally bring practical instrumental skills and be confident leading ensembles and performances. Just as importantly, we are looking for someone who will bring their own musical strengths to the program. There is no expectation that the next teacher will replicate the existing program exactly. We want the program to continue to grow and evolve with the person who takes it on.
The position would suit an experienced Music teacher, but could equally provide a fantastic opportunity for a teacher with strong musical skills and a passion for developing children's enjoyment of music.
Time fraction: 0.4 FTE ¿ two days per week
Teaching load: Eight classes across Foundation¿Grade 6, including the timetabled Grade 5/6 Rock Band program
Additional opportunities: Lunchtime instrumental/ensemble groups, performances, concerts and whole-school productions
