The College opened on its present site in 1955 and is nestled in a picturesque valley surrounded by rolling red gum hills and beautiful country. The Glenelg River meanders through the township.
It is 315km (4 hours) West of Melbourne, 290km (3 hours from Geelong) and is approximately 70km (45mins) from Hamilton Victoria and Mt. Gambier South Australia.

Casterton Secondary College services the needs and provides opportunities for the people of Strathdownie, Dergholm, Coleraine, Merino and Casterton.
Enrolment and Demographics
Casterton Secondary College is a single campus, Year 7 - 12 school. The 2026 enrolment is approximately100 students. Our students come predominantly from rural or related backgrounds; there are low levels of students born overseas and very few students of Koori background.
We currently have 15 teaching staff (including the Principal Class), with part-time staff this equates to 13.8 effective fulltime positions. There are 11.1 non-teaching staff including education support staff. We have a school doctor and mental health practitioner and are currently advertising for a school nurse.
Educational
Students at Years 7 to 10 study a core curriculum of English, Maths, Humanities, Science, PE/Health, Science, Agriculture/Horticulture, Technologies and Art.
Year 11 and 12 students select individual pathways.
The College makes every effort to provide a broad range of choices at VCE level, including access to subjects via the Virtual School. In addition to a large offering of VCE subjects, VCE Vocational Major (VM) and Victorian Pathways Certificate (VPC) also operate. Additionally, we have an SBA and SWL student stream.
Students benefit from the educational experiences on the adjacent 16-hectare school farm which runs sheep and cattle. They also participate in applied learning programs such as oenology, aquaculture, viticulture, and produce both glasshouse and hydroponically grown vegetables and herbs. The College offers a wide range of extension and enrichment programs including an instrumental music program and sport. Students participate in a range of competitions including subject competitions.
Technology
The College has two rooms of computers and a ratio of one computer to one student which includes a combination of three trolleys of netbooks, i-pads and desk top computers. The school Intranet provides storage and pick up facilities for all students and staff. Wireless connectivity enables all staff to access the network and the internet from anywhere in the school. Smart Televisions are installed in all classrooms.
Environmental- grounds and facilities
The College grounds are extensive and well maintained providing an inviting environment to the College community and visitors. Sporting facilities include a multipurpose stadium, ovals, covered passive recreation areas, covered play area and cricket nets.
Students also have access to outdoor gym equipment (five stations) as part of a soon to be developed walking trail.
State-of-the arts technology facilities and equipment (including a drone, plasma cutter etc.) supports students to study a wide range of subjects including Product Design Technology in Wood and Metal and Food Technology.
The music centre allows students to gain one on one, and small group instruction in a range of instruments.

The Canteen Manager is responsible for the effective and efficient management of the canteen and the provision of nutritious, quality and appealing food priced in such a way that is accessible to all students whilst generating an appropriate return on investment.
Responsibilities:
OH&S
Maintain a clean safe working environment at all times, ensure a very high standard of hygiene and cleanliness in the canteen through an appropriate regime of daily and other regular cleaning.
Ensure the health, safety and welfare of all canteen staff and volunteers (including self).
Ensure correct food handling and hygiene practices.
Ensure the safe operation of all kitchen equipment and appliances.
Ensure adherence to safe manual handling techniques.
Undertake regular formal health and safety audits and canteen risk assessments.
Immediately report health and safety hazards, incidents and accidents as well as maintenance issues in accordance with College protocols (online reporting system).
Attend to daily security matters in the canteen including locking of doors and windows, securing cash, restricting entry and access and switching off equipment and appliances.
Facilitate an industrious, harmonious and enjoyable working environment for all canteen staff and volunteers.
Immediately report inappropriate student behaviour for teaching staff follow up and rectification.
Ensure that the operation of the canteen is in line with the values of the College.
Maintain and update all records pertaining to State and Federal safety legislation and school OH&S processes.
Knowledge and application of CSC and DE OH&S requirements, WorkSafe legislation, Laboratory Safety Rules and risk management processes.
Implement food safety procedures and processes to ensure that correct food handling and hygiene practices are used to prevent food spoilage, contamination and illness.
Canteen Management:
Plan, organise, monitor and lead all aspects of the daily operation of the canteen.
Provide leadership, supervision and training to volunteers to ensure the delivery of an efficient, quality and affordable food service.
In collaboration with the Business Manager, monitor and review food product sale prices with a view to achieving an appropriate balance between sales volume, profit margin and value for money without compromising quality.
In collaboration with the Business Manager, actively participate in the annual budget process including identifying capital requirements.
Negotiate with local suppliers to source quality ingredients and products at highly competitive prices.
Monitor and maintain stock at optimal levels and undertake regular stock takes.
Actively monitor the College calendar, weekly and daily bulletins in order to predict and plan for daily demand in order to satisfy customer needs and minimise wastage.
Order supplies as required and check deliveries against invoices and delivery dockets.
Count, reconcile and record the daily takings in accordance with internal procedures.
Create, maintain and enforce a roster of canteen volunteers in line with workplace health and safety requirements.
Adhere to College's sign in and sign out procedures.
Prepare, cook and deliver of a variety of quality, nutritious, consistent and well-presented food for sale.
Prepare and deliver a variety of healthy snacks ¿ not chocolate bars, lollies etc.
Provide healthy food and drink choices for the school canteen in line with the National Healthy School Canteen Guidelines.
Review the canteen menu and product offerings on a fortnightly basis, with the Business Manager.
Analyse and understand student purchasing habits and tastes in order to develop and implement appropriate menu strategies and product offerings.
Minimise wastage through the adoption of good food preparation and food handling techniques.
Provide quality and cost-effective catering for various College events and functions.
Other duties as determined by the principal.
