An education support class position at this range will perform tasks that are carried out in accordance with guidelines, accepted practice, and school policy under supervision and direction. This may include coordination of other education support class staff within the work area or educational program.
An education support class position supports the educational services being provided to students but must not include duties of a teacher as defined in clause 2.6.1 of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic) or its successor. Supervision of students can be required individually or in groups up to 4 in controlled circumstances and where the responsibility for students remains clearly with a teacher.
Certification and/or qualifications of up to three years can be required at this level (noting that Registered Nurse is not included at this level, the first level for which is Level 1 range 3).
A role at this range may include:
An education support class position at this range commencing at the base will initially be limited to undertaking routine tasks that are carried out under close supervision and direction. Work that carries some degree of independence will generally involve a limited number of tasks performed on a regular basis where priorities are clear, procedures are well established, and direction is readily available. Subject to any specific qualification and/or training requirement, an education support class employee employed in this range may be progressively required to undertake coordination, specialised student/teacher support tasks, or technical tasks as experience in the role is gained.
The responsibilities of this position will be:
Bus Driver Responsibilities
Student Transport & SafetySafely operate the school bus in compliance with traffic laws, safety regulations, and school policies. School buses must not exceed the 100km/hour limit.
Transport students with disabilities to and from school, ensuring their comfort and safety.
Follow the designated DET route assigned to the bus run.
Familiarise yourself with designated pick-up/drop-off points, and any specific student needs.
Ensure each student is dropped off to a responsible adult (parent or caregiver) at their designated location; never leave a student unattended.
Respond appropriately in emergency situations, including administering first aid and coordinating evacuations if needed.
Maintain a calm, supportive, and orderly environment on board.
Conduct daily thorough pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections to ensure safety and cleanliness.
Report any mechanical issues, safety concerns, or required maintenance to the bus coordinator immediately.
Deliver the bus to service provider for required maintenance i.e. new tyres or service
Fuel the bus when not carrying students. Check if AdBlue is required.
Ensure all fuel dockets and completed inspection sheets are given to the bus coordinator at the end of each month.
Communicate respectfully and clearly with students, families, support workers, chaperones, and school staff.
Professionally report any incidents, student concerns, or behavioural issues following school procedures.
Maintain accurate vehicle logbook records.
Respect student privacy and maintain confidentiality at all times.
Follow all Department of Education, school, and legal guidelines regarding student transport and disability access.
Arrive at school 10 minutes prior to the commencement of your shift.
If unwell, notify the principal as early as possible (preferably between 6:00am ¿ 6:00pm).
Seek prior approval for any leave from the principal.
Personal leave (sick/carer¿s) may be used where available; limited hours can be claimed without a medical certificate.
All school holidays are paid; no additional annual/holiday leave applies.
Other leave requires principal-approved leave without pay.

Bus Chaperone Responsibilities
Assist students with disabilities in safely boarding and exiting the school bus, including the use of mobility aids, seatbelts, or specialised equipment as required.
Supervise and support students during transit to ensure a calm, safe, and respectful environment on the bus.
Monitor student behaviour and wellbeing, responding appropriately to individual needs and seeking assistance from the driver or school staff when necessary.
Ensure each student is dropped off to a responsible adult (parent or caregiver) at their designated location; never leave a student unattended.
Support students in feeling comfortable, safe, and included during their journey to and from school.
Maintain clear and respectful communication with students, families, the bus driver, and school staff.
Monitor the bus phone for incoming messages from the school or parents. Notify the bus driver of relevant messages.
Communication with parents ¿ report absence messages to the school.
Bus chaperone position is linked to the school in general, not a specific bus.
Support the driver in managing emergencies, including assisting in evacuations, administering basic first aid and keeping students calm.
Use the iPad to check students in and out on every trip. The bus must be walked after each trip to ensure all students and belongings are off. Scanning the `bus walked¿ card legally ties you to ensuring that all students have exited safely.
First aid kit management ¿ notify the school of any supplies that need replacing.
Keep accurate records of student attendance, incidents, or concerns during transport.
Report any behavioural, safety, or welfare concerns to the school or appropriate personnel in a timely manner.
Assist in maintaining cleanliness of the bus.
Maintain student confidentiality and treat all students with dignity and respect at all times.

Warracknabeal Special Developmental School (SDS) is a dual-model special education setting located in the North Wimmera, approximately 340 kilometres from the Melbourne Central Business District, serving students with disabilities from Warracknabeal and the surrounding district of the Yarriambiack and parts of the Buloke Shires.
Warracknabeal Special Developmental School¿s new purpose-built facilities share the site with Warracknabeal Primary School and Warracknabeal Secondary College.
The school provides education programs for 5¿18-year-old students with mild, moderate and profound intellectual disabilities associated with physical, social, emotional, behavioural, multiple and sensory impairments. The school provides a specialised and challenging curriculum, utilising elements of TEACCH structured teaching to build a supportive environment that promotes personal independence and a valued lifestyle. The school curriculum is based on the Victorian Curriculum 2.0, with ASDAN¿s Towards Independence coursework forming our Senior Secondary pathway.
There are currently 33 students enrolled at the school, with 18 students in Years F-6 and 15 in Years 7-12.
The staffing profile of Warracknabeal Special Developmental School includes a principal, 4.4 full time equivalent (FTE) teachers, 10 FTE Education Support (ES) staff, and 1.0 FTE office administration staff. The ES staff includes classroom teaching aides, bus drivers, and bus chaperones. The school has three bus runs twice daily.
