Range 4 is distinguished by broader management responsibility, particularly in the areas of finance, human resource and other support functions. Range 4 is responsible for managing a range of functions under a wide range of conditions, subject to the size and complexity of school operations.
Objectives will, generally, be clearly defined; guidelines will be broad and day-to-day direction minimal. Management responsibility extends to ensuring appropriate support levels are maintained across the school. Range 4 generally provides key support and timely advice to the leadership team and school council and liaises with the general school community, the Department and other government agencies and service providers.
Specialised professional roles will carry a high level of independence and accountability where suitable scope is provided to achieve objectives.
An education support class position supports the educational services being provided to students, but must not include duties of teaching as defined in clause 2.6.1 of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic) or its successor. Supervision of students cannot be required except where it is an integral part of the employee¿s position or involves supervision of students individually or in small groups, in controlled circumstances, where the responsibility for students remains clearly with a teacher.
Purpose of the Position
The Associate Artist plays an integral role in supporting students¿ artistic development within the VCASS Music Specialism. The position requires elite-level musical expertise, significant professional performance experience, and a demonstrated capacity for effective and engaging pedagogy. Associate Artists contribute directly to fostering artistic excellence, stylistic understanding, and high-level collaborative skills across individual and ensemble learning contexts.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching & Artistic Support
Prepare individual musical parts to a high professional standard in advance of rehearsals and performances.
Provide engaging, artistically rigorous rehearsals that support the development of musical excellence in alignment with the VCASS Music Specialism.
Tailor instruction to the individual needs of students and/or ensembles, incorporating strategies that advance stylistic understanding and effective rehearsal approaches.
Support students in preparing for performances, assessments, competitions, and auditions.
Collaboration & Communication
Liaise closely with students, Instrumental Music Teachers (IMTs), and other VCASS Music staff to determine appropriate repertoire, learning goals, and timelines.
Maintain clear, timely, and professional communication regarding scheduling, progress updates, repertoire planning, and administrative requirements.
Participate in collaborative planning where required and maintain awareness of the broader VCASS training program and its specialist context.
Assessment & Reporting
Monitor individual student progress and provide ongoing, constructive verbal feedback with particular focus on stylistic development, collaborative musicianship, and rehearsal skills.
Provide written feedback in accordance with VCASS reporting requirements and timelines.
Raise concerns related to student progress, engagement, or well-being through appropriate channels in a timely manner.
Administration
Adhere to all administrative processes and expectations in line with VCASS policies and procedures, including tutorial scheduling, communications, record keeping, and use of the IMT website.
Contribute to the smooth running of the program by meeting deadlines and engaging with required operational processes.

VCASS runs under a unique model and is operational over extended hours, with regular classes in some areas scheduled between 8am- 5.30pm Monday-Friday and some staff have adjusted work schedules as a result.
