Healesville is a small town nestled in the foothills of the eastern ranges approximately 60 kilometres from the centre of Melbourne. Healesville Primary School has served the local community since its establishment in 1866 and different generations of many families are counted in its past and present student body. Originally Healesville had farming and timber as its main industries, but as the community has evolved it has developed into a tourist and wine area.
We have an enrolment of 200 students with approximately 10% of our student population made up from indigenous families. This figure has been quite static for the past few years. There is a gender balance between boys and girls across the school as a whole but not necessarily at individual year levels.
The school has excellent facilities. The BER building provides flexible learning options along with a two storey complex of 12 classrooms which provides an impressive range of educational facilities. Staff and conference rooms are located in an administration building. There is a separate library alongside a computer lab and an assembly hall complex that includes a canteen, art-craft and music rooms. We also have a multipurpose cooking/science space.
The school site is magnificent and has a view across the town of Healesville to the hills beyond. Landscaped gardens, a number of active play areas and the Ruins, as the bricked courtyard area is affectionately known, encourages creative play, social interaction and passive reflections.
We have some innovative programs at our school including a strong focus on science and sustainability. Our satellite program with Yarra Ranges Special Developmental School is growing and is a very successful partnership. An active and committed Staff and School Council ensure every child at Healesville has opportunities to succeed in learning and discover their talents.
The school web address further outlines the many attributes of the primary school and can be found at the following site www.hps.vic.edu.au.
