Role
Assistant Principals have primary responsibility for the management of significant areas or functions within the school to ensure the effective development, provision and evaluation of the school's education program. In exercising the responsibility, Assistant Principals have the authority to make all significant decisions relating to the program, budget and staffing of their area of designated responsibility, within the framework of the School's Strategic Plan, policies and budget.
Assistant Principals report directly to the Principal and contribute to the overall management of the school through the involvement in corporate policy formulation and decision making. The management of significant school programs or functional areas in the school involve the Assistant Principals analysing the needs of students and the translation of state educational policy and frameworks into appropriate education programs to meet the needs of all students.
Typically assistant principals will be responsible for the effective use of the teaching staff and program budget of a defined area of the school's operation and for the oversight and leadership of the educational programs provided utilising these resources.
At Monbulk College, the role of the Assistant Principals will grow and change as the College priorities expand. The Assistant Principal will be expected to work flexibly and collaboratively to lead and manage a wide range of responsibilities within the college program.

Responsibilities
The Assistant Principal will provide dynamic leadership to students and staff. They will take a leading role to ensure that learning, teaching and wellbeing requirements are adhered to across the College. They will take a leading role in the development and implementation of school strategic goals and priorities. With leaderships, teachers and other key staff, they will develop a strong sense of group identity among students and ensure that their achievements, individual and group, are acknowledged and celebrated. The Assistant Principal will drive a culture of high expectations, one that is positive, supportive and inclusive. Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
Staff Leadership
- Lead, support and manage the performance of staff to improve the quality of teaching and learning, student outcomes through mentoring, collegial interaction and critical reflection on practice, feedback and data.
- Support the work of the Sub School Leader/s and teachers to ensure effective engagement with students.
- Conduct regular meetings of the teachers at each year level to monitor staff and student progress and achievement and identify areas for improvement.
- Take responsibility for school improvement through active engagement with the School Strategic Plan, Annual Implementation Plans and School Improvement Team.
- Ensure consistent approaches, processes and practices across the College.
- Lead teachers to ensure that classroom management strategies and teaching practice achieve outstanding learning outcomes and build resilience and robust self-esteem amongst students.
- Attend and actively contribute to School Council, college events and functions as a representative of the school.
Curriculum, Teaching and Learning
- Model excellence in all teaching and learning related matters, such as the adherence to the requirements of Victorian Curriculum 2.0 in the classroom, sound course planning feedback and assessment practices, the use of the College¿s instructional model, and active support of a professional growth culture.
- Lead and support colleagues and relevant teams to identify curriculum development needs, pedagogical issues and assessment strategies pertinent to the needs of students.
- Determine the final form of any curriculum proposals
- Provide leadership in the development of strategies to raise awareness of the special needs of students in areas such as behaviour management, wellbeing, social and emotional development and transition.
- Work with staff to ensure that consistency across classes is achieved in student engagement and behavioural expectations.
- Ensure the timely preparation of subject selection handbooks for students and staff.
- Lead the organisation of information programs for students and parents, including information sessions, orientation programs and transition.
General
- Contribute to the overall management of the school
- Contribute to processes, policies and practices that improve the effectiveness of the school
- Lead the improvement of student learning and achievement
- Manage complex improvement processes
- Support, mentor and coach leaders within the school
- Motivate, engage and influence staff to improve their performance
- Supervise and coordinate the work of middle/senior curriculum and/or sub-school leaders

- Manage programs to improve the professional knowledge, practice and learning of teaching staff
- The maintenance and development of school spirit, culture and unique identity and the building of a sense of belonging to the college by both students and staff
- Manage discipline matters that are beyond the scope of management of sub-schools
- Make decisions relating to the employment of short-term replacement teachers
- Liaising with the Principal Class Team in the development of strategies to address serious student management issues.
- Implementing a range of specific programs, initiatives and innovations to support and engage students.
- Working with the classroom teachers and Learning Specialists to implement the school's processes related to appropriate accommodations for students
- Other duties as directed by the Principal.
The Assistant Principal will work with the Business Manager to support the daily organisation of the college, including the college's calendar of events and activities and other daily operational matters in relation to students and student programs.

VIT LANTITE
To be eligible for employment, transfer or promotion in the principal or teacher class a person must have provisional or full registration from the Victorian Institute of Teaching. In addition, from 3 August 2020, to be eligible for employment in the principal class or teacher class, a person who graduated from a Victorian Initial Teacher Education program after 1 July 2016, must demonstrate that they have passed the literacy and numeracy test for initial teacher education (LANTITE) requirements. This condition is satisfied where the LANTITE requirement is part of the Victorian Initial Teacher Education program completed by the person.
