About Us:
The First Law Officer (FLO) Team sits within the Integrity Policy and Performance business unit of the Justice System Coordination and Reform group and leads the delivery of a number of the Attorney-General's First Law Officer functions.
The Attorney General's First Law Officer function comprises a variety of interesting matters which go to upholding the rule of law and promoting the administration of justice. The team's work includes receiving and managing applications and advises on:
- petitions for mercy, including the Governor's power to grant a pardon and the Attorney-General's power to refer matters to the Court of Appeal;
- the transfer of prisoners between jurisdictions to face trial;
- the expungement scheme, a scheme which allows for the expungement of historical convictions for homosexual activity which would not be a crime today; and
- the State's compliance with its obligations to act as a model litigant.
About the Role:
Some of your duties will include:
- Assisting with the provision of high-quality assessments of applications and complaints in relation to the Attorney-General's First Law Officer functions.
- Engaging, consulting, and working collaboratively with our partners across the department and the broader justice system to deliver the First Law Officer functions.
- Contributing to the preparation and lodgement of cabinet and parliamentary documentation and the drafting of ministerial and other correspondence.
About You:
To be successsful in this role you will be able to demonstrate:
- Knowledge of/and or experience of regulation, administrative assessments or law.
- Strong analytical and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of/and or experience in Victorian Government administrative processes would be advantageous.
Qualifications:
- A tertiary qualification in criminology, public policy or law is highly desirable but not mandatory.
