Austin Health is the major provider of tertiary health services, health professional education and research across three campuses in the north-east of Melbourne and statewide. We have a highly engaged, diverse and collaborative workforce that is unified by our goal to help people live healthy and fulfilled lives.
About the Nutrition and Dietetics Department
The Nutrition and Dietetics Department is part of the Allied Health division, which employs over 1,000 health professionals across 27 disciplines, broadly known as the therapies and sciences, who work as key members of the multidisciplinary team aiming to provide the best outcomes for patients via preventing, diagnosing and treating a range of healthcare conditions.
Our department has around 55 staff members across three sites - Austin (acute care), Repat (sub-acute care) and Talbot (rehabilitation), providing services to inpatients, outpatients and home & community programs. We operate as one department and come together for staff meetings and continuing education. Our work environment is vibrant and fast paced and we are a friendly and supportive team. We have many highly skilled and experienced dietitians who lead our clinical teams - specialist medicine, oncology, surgical/ICU/gastro, paediatrics and mental health, sub-acute and ambulatory care, and portfolios - staff education, quality, research, student training, food service, nutrition support and workforce operations.
About the role
The Allied Health Assistant (AHA) plays an integral role in supporting the Dietitians across both the inpatient and outpatient care settings. As an Allied Health Assistant in the Nutrition and Dietetics Department you will support the Oncology, Specialist Medicine, Bariatric Surgery Outpatient and Home Enteral Nutrition teams under the direction of a Senior Clinician stream leader.
Each AHA is supported to work confidently within the duties delegated by the Dietitian. They are encouraged to take initiative, work autonomously where appropriate, and apply their skills to enhance patient care. We are seeking an AHA who is creative in their approach, proactively solves problems and contributes to service improvement, and demonstrates exceptional teamwork.
The Oncology and Specialist Medicine Streams include services to inpatients including oncology, palliative care, general medicine, renal, spinal, neurology, neurosurgery, vascular, infectious diseases, rheumatology, respiratory, stroke, cardiology, cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery and ventilation weaning unit. The Allied Health Assistant supports the inpatient dietitians by undertaking nutrition screening, implementing low risk interventions, monitoring nutrition interventions and assisting with discharge planning and education to ensure ongoing high-quality care.
Austin Health is one of the country's largest public bariatric surgery providers. The service operates under the Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery unit and the team includes surgeons, nurses, dietitians anda psychologist. The dietetic AHA assists the coordination of the dietetic service including booking outpatient appointments both pre and post-operatively, sending appointment reminders, maintaining patient database and drafting and sending discharge summaries.
The Home Enteral Nutrition (HEN) service provides nutritional care to Austin Health patients requiring enteral feeding in the community. The dietetic AHA supports the dietitian by communicating with patients, booking review appointments and assisting with equipment management.
