The Learning Area Leader is responsible for the educational and social development of students within their domain. They actively monitor student progress, provide guidance and support, and implement evidence-based strategies for academic improvement. A core component of this role is mentoring and coaching staff, fostering professional growth, and building a collaborative, team-oriented culture within the Learning Area.
The Learning Area Leader works closely with the leadership team, Year Level Leaders, and teaching staff to create an environment conducive to both academic success and personal growth. They play a pivotal role in developing a unified school vision and an actionable Curriculum and Pedagogical Program that caters to the diverse needs of students.
Leading Teaching and Learning
Lead the design, implementation, and evaluation of PE/Health curriculum and assessment.
Ensure curriculum alignment with Victorian standards.
Model and promote high-impact teaching strategies across the school.
Support staff in differentiating instruction to meet diverse student needs.
Lead staff in the implementation of Tier 1 strategies for positive classroom management.
Developing Self and Others
Foster a culture of collaboration, reflection, and continuous improvement.
Lead faculty meetings, workshops, and professional development initiatives.
Mentor early-career teachers and support their professional growth.
Conduct observations and provide coaching, mentoring and professional learning for staff to enhance PE/Health outcomes and develop their knowledge and application of School Wide Positive Behaviours in line with Victorian Teaching and Learning model 2.0.
Leading Improvement, Innovation, and Change
Implement school initiatives that align with the Annual Implementation Plan (AIP) via development of PE/Health Team Action Plan.
Promote the use of innovative pedagogical approaches and digital literacy.
Use data to identify areas for instructional improvement and intervention.
Leading the Management of the School
Oversee faculty budget and resource allocation to support PE/Health teaching and learning.
Contribute to the development of school policies related to PE/Health.
Ensure compliance with school policies and regulatory requirements.
Engaging and Working with the Community
Use the School Wide Positive Behaviour Framework to foster positive relationships with students, parents, and the wider school community.
Collaborate with external PE/Health organizations and education networks.
Communicate faculty achievements and initiatives effectively to stakeholders.
Advocate for PE/Health programs that support student success.
KEY DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACTIVITIES

Oversee recruitment and workforce planning for the Learning Area
Build staff capacity in curriculum development, behaviour management, coaching, and mentoring.
Manage and conduct peer observations with coaching conversations.
Use data from Learning Specialists to inform practice and align to school strategic plan
Oversee Performance & Development of Staff in Learning Area
Learning Area Leaders are responsible for:
The overall leadership and management of the students and staff in their Learning Area, ensuring a strong emotional intelligence and efficacy are key criteria to the overall learning success and happiness of our staff and students.
The social and emotional wellbeing of staff in their Learning Area with an appreciation that leadership roles have a line of sight to whole school improvement.
Ensuring Learning Area Managers implement their position description in a consistent and effective manner.
Monitoring and supporting the educational and academic progress and development of students. Ensuring appropriate strategies are implemented to maximise the learning opportunities of all students.
Cultivating and maintaining positive staff morale and the moral purpose of "Every Warrnambool Student Thrives" whilst building a sense of belonging and community for both students and staff.
Establishing strong and open communication with parents and students, including coordination of information evenings regarding teaching and learning at school.
Building an effective staff team ensuring common and agreed goals and directions in accordance with the annual Learning Area Team Action Plan, with a focus on staff improvement, consistency and growth.
Implementing a range of specific programs, initiatives and innovations to support and engage students.
Establishing a strong working relationship with the DI team and the Literacy and Numeracy support teams within the school.
Effectively and actively participating in the Teaching and Learning Committee to provide strategic direction for the school and ensuring that common and agreed processes and procedures are implemented across all Learning Areas.
Assisting with the design, implementation and regular evaluation of the Annual Implementation Plan.
Promoting and advocating for Warrnambool College and its students and staff within our broader community.
Lead the departmental initiatives at a whole school level.
Mentoring the Learning Area Manager
Being an active member of the school Leadership team and taking an active role in whole of school leadership endeavours.
Any other duties as directed by the Principal.
Teachers currently registered or eligible for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching and qualified to teach and/or have demonstrated experience in the curriculum area(s) specified for the position.
