About the role:
There are eight (8) Critical Care HMO positions, including rotations across Anaesthesia, Intensive Care, Emergency Medicine, and Williamstown Nights:
Rotation order is fixed to ensure that prevocational training requirements are met for applications in the subsequent year. Each specialty college specifies minimum experience requirements for eligibility. The rotation structure has therefore been designed to ensure that trainees in each stream meet the relevant college eligibility criteria.
The nights rotation is generally based at Williamstown Hospital. There is no after-hours operating at this site, with the role primarily involving covering the surgical ward and sub-acute medical wards.
The selection process for these positions is highly competitive. Appointments are based on a combination of curriculum vitae (CV), references, and interview performance. As Western Health typically interviews only up to one fifth of applicants, it is important to ensure that your CV clearly outlines all relevant experience, including: clinical exposure, courses, academic awards and honours, research activity, philanthropic work, and broader hospital involvement. Please note that all applicants invited to interview may be required to provide evidence supporting the items listed on their CV.
Critical Care HMOs will work under appropriate senior supervision during their rotations – including consultant-led care in Anaesthesia, and senior registrar and consultant oversight in ICU and ED. Within this supported environment, successful applicants will have the opportunity to develop and demonstrate a junior registrar approach to their work. Professionalism, initiative, reliability, and a willingness to learn are therefore essential attributes.
