The Wellbeing Counsellor is a key member of the Viewbank College Wellbeing Team, providing student-centred support that promotes wellbeing, engagement, and mental health. The WC contributes to the development and delivery of wellbeing programs, liaises with families and external agencies, and supports the coordination of services for students requiring external supports.
The role operates within DE¿s frameworks for student wellbeing, inclusion, and disability, and requires the ability to exercise professional judgment within clearly established policies, guidelines, and supervision structures. The Wellbeing Counsellor works collaboratively with the Principal Team Member responsible for Wellbeing and Inclusion, Senior and Middle School Leaders, other wellbeing team members and the Mental Health Practitioner to enhance student outcomes and wellbeing across the school.
Relevant qualifications in Youth Work, Counselling, Social Work or a related allied health disciplines are essential.
Operating under the coordination of the Wellbeing Coordinator and as part of the Wellbeing Team, the Student Wellbeing Officer will:
Work collaboratively with the Wellbeing Coordinator, Wellbeing Team, and House Leaders to ensure timely and appropriate interventions for student needs.
Collaborate with the Disability Inclusion Leader and other relevant school staff to ensure students receive appropriate support and adjustments, and contribute to a positive, inclusive school culture that promotes belonging and respect for diversity.
Participate in team meetings to discuss referrals and share best practice approaches.
Receive and act on referrals, providing counselling support and case management for students.
Develop meaningful case plans and set goals with students, including effective crisis management when required.
Maintain accurate, confidential records of student contact and wellbeing activities in line with DE and school requirements, using Compass, eduSafe, and other databases to record referrals and updates.
Advocate for students where appropriate, facilitate external referrals, and act as a conduit between students and services.
Manage complex cases requiring advanced interventions and cross-professional or agency collaboration.
Collaborate with students, teachers, caregivers, and external services to implement interventions such as Behaviour Support Plans, Re-engagement Plans, and Safety Plans.
Liaise with families and carers through phone contact, meetings, and participation in care team meetings and professional networks.
Co -design and deliver targeted group interventions and therapeutic programs to promote resilience and wellbeing.
Co- facilitate pro-social activities and events within the school and in partnership with community agencies (e.g., lunchtime activities, celebration days, information sessions, assemblies).
Establish positive relationships with students, acting as a role model and responding to individual needs with empathy and consistency.
Support teachers to identify and respond to student wellbeing needs, and build their capacity to implement educational, social, and emotional supports, including reasonable adjustments.
Ensure compliance with Department of Education Child Safe Standards, Mandatory Reporting legislation, and wellbeing protocols.
Perform other duties consistent with the classification as directed by the Principal.

With a student enrolment of approximately 1450 and located on 5.4 hectares in the City of Banyule, Viewbank College provides outstanding educational opportunities to families in Rosanna, Heidelberg, Viewbank and surrounding suburbs. The College is academically focused and has a high level of participation in other curriculum areas such as Sport, Music and the Visual & Performing Arts.
The College has developed a strong and tangible ethos based around hard work, respect for learning, the rights of others and the pursuit of success.
