Roles supporting school-based apprenticeships and traineeships (SBATs) and school student access to vocational education and training (VET) will join the Department of Education’s 17 Jobs, Skills and Pathways (JSP) teams across all areas of the state in 2027.
School students choose to do VET or an SBAT as part of their VCE or Victorian Pathways Certificate (VPC) so they can build job-ready skills while finishing school. This helps them gain confidence in an industry or role that aligns with their early career goals, so they’re prepared for what’s next.
Last year, 61,513 Victorian school students participated in VET or an SBAT. This number has increased by 19% since 2021, growing for 5 consecutive years to a record-high level in 2025.
The roles we’re recruiting will be part of the strong place-based workforce across Victoria that continues to improve students’ access to high-quality vocational pathways.
We’re recruiting to 4 types of roles that help school students do vocational pathways as part of secondary school. All of these roles will start in January 2027.
You’ll work alongside local schools as well as employers, training providers and other partners to support the delivery of Head Start or VET,helping students access to high-quality vocational learning and workplace opportunities.
The Head Start program helps students do an SBAT, which is part-time employment and training while they finish school.
The program provides supports so that students can succeed in their training and work, complete school and build skills they need to develop strong careers.
We’re recruiting people for 2 types of role to deliver the Head Start program from 2027:
Students can choose from a wide range of VET subjects to do in their final years of secondary school, as part of their VCE or VPC. Students often do VET at another school, a TAFEs or another registered training organisation (RTO).
We need staff to help schools work together in VET clusters to improve local students’ access to VET and support student transportation to VET.
